Get Your Shroom On!

The Magic Kingdom Of Mushrooms

"Did you know that mushrooms are neither a plant nor an animal, but in fact have their own kingdom? In the 1960s, they were given special classification as the “Kingdom of Fungi”. With an estimated 1.5-2 million species on earth, fungi could theoretically outnumber plants 6 to 1. And just like animals, they inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide.

The Chinese have been using mushrooms for medicinal purposes for centuries and it seems the West is finally catching on. And for good reason: “Maitake, shiitake, chaga and reishi are being researched for their potential anti-cancer, anti-viral or immunity-enhancing properties”, while psilocybin (a derivative of certain psychedelic mushrooms) is being studied to help people with mental illnesses like obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Penicillin and streptomycin, meanwhile, are examples of mushroom-derived antibiotics already in circulation."

Health Is Beauty : Weekend Review (August 14, 2010)

- Many people say they smoke because it helps to take the edge off and reduce their stress levels. But new research has found that smoking induces an opposite effect, increasing stress levels over time rather than calming the nerves.

- In a statement that must have been designed to make us laugh, or gag if anyone is really paying attention, the FDA recently announced that seafood from the Gulf of Mexico is fine to consume.

- Daniel Vitalis has a new series called, Indigenous Nutrition & Physical Evolution, up on the Superfood Speakeasy channel. I leave no Daniel Vitalis stone unturned! This guy is a gold mine of fascinating info (damn sexy too).

- Are you ready for a world without antibiotics? Antibiotics are a bedrock of modern medicine. But in the very near future, we're going to have to learn to live without them once again.

- Dr. Weil's interactive Anti-Inflammatory Food Pyramid allows up to two glasses of red wine and a touch of dark chocolate daily.

- Two lists were compiled with data from the US Department of Agriculture; one is The Dirty Dozen and the other is The Clean 15. Tests were run to determine the amount of pesticide residue found in non-organic fruits and vegetables after they had been pressure washed. The produce that made The Dirty Dozen list tested positive for at least 47 different chemicals, with some testing positive for as many as 67. And that wasn’t just in the skin. They found traces all the way down into the seeds! By making sure that you stick to organic when buying the fruit and veggies from this list, you can reduce your exposure to harmful toxins by as much as 80 percent.

My Top 5 Favorite Raw Foodist YouTube Stars. Love Em For Being So Fully Themselves &, Of Course, For Sharing Their Groovy Message -xo

1. Daniel Vitalis

UPDATE: Some of you have written to me, asking why I would include Daniel Vitalis on this list, much less put him at the top, because he is is no longer a raw vegan. That's a fair question. He's at the top of my list, because I relate to him as an open-minded seeker and appreciate his willingness to change his mind, explore new ideas, and present his ever evolving findings with humor and grace. He started out in the raw food world, is still an active part of that community, and presents an anti-dogmatic take on what some people force into a freaky Type A lifestyle. I don't agree with everything he says, but I love him anyway.

3. Natasha St. Michael

4. Dan McDonald

5. Tonya Kay

Daniel Vitalis Is The #1 HOTTiE Of The Raw Food Movement. Granted, This Aint His Best Angle, But You Can't Beat Pillow Talk W/The Main Man!

Sorry guys, but you're gonna have to double click on these vids to see em in full screen. Lisa Paris is totally adorable & I don't mind looking at her at all, BUT I am miffed that Daniel got cut off here. Still don't know why my blog chops off the right side of my video posts, but, in this case especially, it sucks the big one!
