L.A. had the coolest, most lovely summer... so what's with the 100 plus weather now at the end of September? Sheesh! Makes me feel lethargic & slow in the nugget. Hopefully it'll chill out by Wednesday, cuzz slow & lethargic just won't cut it for my birthday!

Here's a sweet lil Q & A she just did with LAist.com:

LAist: What is your earliest memory of making a piece of art?

Lola: Finger paints I suppose, it's hard to pinpoint a moment so long ago.

Q: Who are some of your favorite artists?

A: Alive? Travis Louie, Todd Schorr, Chet Zar, Ana Bagayan, Josh Petker...and on and on and on!

Q: Do you remember seeing a gallery or museum show that particularly inspired
you?

A: Well, there are many great shows, which I take in and ingest and become inspired by. But many years ago Mark Ryden had an exhibit at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. It was wonderful, and really excited me to see living artists getting museum shows. Something to strive towards.

Q: Where is a place in the world that you would like to go?

A: I have lots of travel dreams, Italy, Paris, Greece, Egypt.

Q: What inspired the pieces in this show? Describe "Ipsum Factum."

A: Ipsum Factum is a show about truth, truths, and our difference within those.

Q: Where do you live in LA? What do you love about your neighborhood?

A: I'm in the valley, and I love it! I live in nature, in the hills, where it's peaceful, calm, and great for painting.

Q: What are some of your favorite LA galleries?

A: Off the top of my head: Corey Helford Gallery, Merry Karnowsky, New Image Art, Michael Kohn. I live close to the Getty Museum, so I take field trips often.

Q: Favorite LA restaurants?

A: Haha! I'm an artist. I live on a budget! I love Casa Vega, yumm!

Q: Favorite LA landmark or place to visit?

A: Griffith Observatory.

Q: Favorite local band?

A: Pioneer ships.

Q: What are you working on next?

A: I'm going to publish a book. My next exhibit will be in 2011 with Greg Simkins

KOSHi Luvs... Flea

In an effort to get more instruments into the hands of kids, Michael Balzary aka Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers has launched a line of affordable bass guitars.

The inspiration for the line, Fleabass, came from his students at the Silverlake Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, where he teaches classes for kids who can't afford a decent instrument. Flea explains:

"I found that a lot of the kids I was teaching were coming in with inexpensive basses, which were pieces of shit. The necks were warped and were falling apart. They were like toys. I wanted to make something that kids could afford but were quality, play well and last a long time…I had been adding my name to established bass models for many years, but I thought, 'Fuck it, I'll make my own bass! I'll make it bitching and it'll be cool!' I just want the kids to rock!"

Thom Yorke At The Echoplex

Big news for L.A. today: In case you haven't heard, Thom Yorke's new band, which remains nameless, includes Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker on drums, and Red Hot Chilli Peppers' one & only Flea(!) on bass. And, what's more... they'll be debuting their act TONiGHT at the Echoplex, which means, you may wanna skip out on work early, like now, and head on over to Sunset Blvd. to get in line. That sidewalk's gonna be one hot mess, but I'm betting it'll be worth the wait if you manage to get in (and that's one huge "if" considering the hipster-celeb hierarchy that unfortunately runs this town).

Wild Fire

I woke up to an orange sky this morning, which was beautiful but ominous. I knew that meant the fires chewing up my beloved east side were still ablaze & threatening to seriously fuck up one of my favorite views and, more importantly, people's homes & lives. Every summer it goes like this... Fire! Fire! Ugh. Griffith Park is still recovering from the fires from a couple of years ago &, while I know it's natural & just a part of living in L.A., it still sucks the big one.

The Mae Shi are no more, which is probably a good thing, cuzz I could never figure out how to pronounce that... "May Shee"?, "My Shee"?, "Me Shee"?

Mika Miko Smells

MiKA MiKO is one of the acts that came up thru L.A.'s all ages, indie-cool venue, The Smell, and is a band best appreciated live. They say so themselves. Bass player, Jessica Clavin, told ClashMusic.com: "I think we come off better live than we do recorded. It’s better to have that impact as a live band, isn’t it? If we had to choose to be better live or recorded, we’d go with live." I happen to think they come off pretty damn well in this video for "I Got A Lot" too.

Well shit... this last month was pretty eye opening in terms of what giving away free music can do. In fact, we were so happy to get our tunes in your hot little hands that we were kind of bummed when May was over & our special offer ended. But then we realized- what the fuck? We're an unsigned band and as independent as it gets. We can do whatever the hell we want and change our minds as many times we feel like it and we're gonna.
