KOSHi Luvs... Nurses

Something is going on in Portland, Oregon. It seems to be the epicenter of cool all of a sudden. And here's a fine example of that... NURSES. Have a listen- they're hippy trippy good.

Obedient Waves is gonna get up to Portland for a show late this summer & hopefully beg-borrow-steal to get Kill Rock Stars to come out to see us play. I've somehow convinced myself that that's the label to be on. It's all-female-run & way artist friendly, plus they rep GOSSiP, one of the baddest bands to happen to music in forever. SOLD!

Lily Cole is Super

In case you had any doubts that super models are leading super-ior lives, here's Natasha Poly and Noemie Lenoir joining Lily Cole on the red carpet at Cannes for her major feature debut in Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. The film was mostly panned by critics, which seems pretty unavoidable considering it was quickly cobbled together with replacement actors after Heather Ledger's untimely death, but Ms. Cole came out smelling like roses, gleaning the majority of the critical praise for her apparently dazzling performance. Beautiful, rich, AND talented? But of course! Fashionista's got the rest of the scoop about that here. Wonder what happened to Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll, the Marilyn Manson project she was suppose to star in. I remember the clips Manson posted on his website & they looked cool as hell.

Oh Yoko

Besides marrying John Lennon (hawt!), rocking the sexy well into her 70s, and being an excellent conceptual marketeer, Yoko Ono has done two artsy things that really hang with me. First, she did an installation that had guests climb up a ladder to stick their heads in a box, leading to the discovery of the word "yes". Secondly, she did a performance piece, inviting guests to approach her one at a time to cut off a bit of her clothing, exposing her vulnerability as an artist and demonstrating her trust in the audience. To both of these stunts, I say a big, fat "AWESOME!". Her music, however, has not made as good an impression. Her primal scream phase was irritating at best. Still, I do not side with the Beatles fanatics who claim she broke up The Fab Four, kinda dug 2007's "Yes, I'm A Witch", and will persist in curiously looking forward to any of her upcoming projects.

Case in point: I am currently looking forward to this...

Pitchfork says that Yoko Ono, along with her Plastic Ono Band, has a new album coming out this September called "Between My Head and the Sky" and a lil sneaky peak preview EP, "Don't Stop Me!", hitting iTunes, June 9th.

My Guilty Pleasure

As ashamed as I am to admit it, I have not moved beyond my geeky teenage years and probably never will. I mean, the second Billy left for a five day trip to Cincinnati, I bolted for my computer to download Twilight. I'd held off thru the movie's theatrical release but could not stop myself from indulging, albeit in secret, once it hit iTunes. I watched it twice before my 24 hour rental expired and then cruised & cruised every little tidbit I could find about it online. Robert Pattinson is divine, the forest scenes were breathtaking, i LOVE VAMPiRES & I truly can not resist a good teen romance. Now, I wish I'd just gone to see it on the big screen (stoopid stoopid!) and will not repeat that mistake when the sequel rolls into town. The Mtv Movie awards are on now & the cast just premiered the New Moon trailer, leaving me whooping with delight & fist-pumping the air. Mtv Movie Awards???!!! I am waaaay out of the closet & quite possibly out of control now... Whoop! Whoop!

White Rabbits Live

How can a signed band be an indie band? If a label is paying for your recordings, getting you publicity, and marketing your tour, doesn't that mean you are no longer indie? Do we need a new term for truly independent bands? I've taken to calling them/us indie-indie, but that seems kind of pathetic and, well, redundant. Of course, I would love Obedient Waves to graduate from indie-indie to just plain indie, but that seems as tough a nut to crack these days as signing with the majors was back in the 90s.

Anyway, I didn't mean to go off on that tangent- really, I didn't. I simply wanted to share with you a new live performance of "Rudy Fails" and "Foxhunting" that the White Rabbits did for Spin magazine, because it's good, and I'm super into this band, BUT Spin introduced them in the accompanying editorial as "New York indie-rockers" and that just set me off. We indie-indie artists are easy to set off like that...

Oh yeah- and I can't embed the video, which also sets me off... I'm like a freaking fire cracker today! Snap. Crackle. Pop.

HERE'S THE DAMN ViDEO.

Enjoy!

Om Song (lyrics)

"OM SONG" - Obedient Waves

om song
i'm taking air in by the yard
om song
i am unthinking but it's hard
om song
i'm stringing daisies in my brain
om song
all this not trying is insane

look at me- I'm so hardcore zen
I can starve myself for days
chanting, panting, pagan, vegan
hold a ready steady gaze
Wrap my ankles up around my neck
And fold my forehead down
Into my lotus-tattooed torso
Listing, twisting out my praise

om song
i'm taking air in by the yard
om song
i am unthinking but it's hard
om song
i'm stringing daisies in my brain
om song
all this not trying is insane

listen up - my words enlighten
when i get into a trance
Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, Nichiren
mold my funky spirit dance
blame my body for my naughty deeds
because it's of this world
unlike my light internal presence
housing my eternal soul

om song
om song
om song
om song

Jane Fonda's Mug Shot

If I HAD to go to jail, god forbid, this is what I would like my mug shot to look like...

Read Jane Fonda's Blog to get an explanation behind this iconic pic straight from the (beautiful) horses mouth.

(note to self: pick up a copy of "My Life So Far". Been diggin on Jane for years & would love to know more about this dynamic, wise, perfectly flawed & enduring sex pot.)

The Dead Weather - "Treat Me Like Your Mother"

I downloaded "Treat Me Like Your Mother" (for FREE) this morning and have been listening to it all day. Yes, I'm beyond obsessed with The Dead Weather. So?!

Kasabian - West Ryder Pauper Lunatic

"Shoot The Runner" is a bad ass song and Kasabian is a bad ass band, so I'm really looking forward to the release of their next album, "West Ryder Pauper Lunatic" (June 8). The first single is "Fire", and you can watch the cinematic-cool video for that below...

Chloe Sevigny Glams It Up 4 Elle

I am dying over this lil 80s number Chloe Sevigny is sporting in the current issue of Elle and can't wait to approximate the look for my next public outing, which should be any year now. I do crawl out from under my laptop from time to time & this jumper-sash combo might just be occasion enough...

The jumpsuit she's wearing is by Armani Exchange and retails for $150. The sash is by Louis Vuitton, and the price will be divulged upon request. Puhleeease! It's a piece of fabric. How much could it possibly be?

Karen O Gives The Finger

I am guilty of "painting" my nails with both liquid paper and the oh so toxic black sharpie back in the day. So, I was pretty stoked that Knock Out cosmetics just came up with a way better way to get that dull, too-cool-to-care look w/out risking blood poisoning or even a shitty chip job. Their new KO polish comes in Flatte Black, Flatte Ivory, and Pink Calamine. Yar!!!!

If it's good enough for Karen O, it's good enough for any self-respecting rock chick.

Obedient Waves at Old Towne Pub in Pasadena

I told you- it's HARD to adjust to life post-Big Sur. Case in point, look at this poster Billy & I just made for our upcoming show at Old Towne Pub. That's none other than Big Sur alum (and one of my personal heroes), Henry Miller, playing some table tennis with a lady friend. They still have a ping pong table set up at the Henry Miller Library in his honor. We just watched a very heated game of it from the patio there this weekend. Ahhhh- good times at the sur...

KOSHi Luvs... Forever 21

I'm a cheap ass. So sue me. You won't get much anyway! Tee hee... C'mon, everyone luvs a lil slum sesh at the 21. Right? Right. So, let's go shopping...

Tortoise Aviator Sunglasses ($5.80)

Floral Satin Strapless Top ($17.80)

Tie-Dye Denim Short ($17.80)

Missy Ankle Cuff Sandal ($15.80)

The Break Up Album

First Lady Gaga and now Scarlett Johansson?! WTF?!!!! I must be losing my edge. I truly wanted to hate this duet that the over-exposed (some might say "over-rated") ScarJo just released with the consummate indie dood, Pete Yorn, but I didn't. It's actually pretty good. See for yourself... NYLON did a little write up on it and the upcoming album of duets it will be featured on.

Lady GaGa on Rolling Stone

I haven't really made my mind up about Lady GaGa. I mean, I'm a rock chick, don't usually get into "pop", & (I'm sorry but) "Poker Face" just aint my thing. However, there is something intriguing about her style. This cover she did for Rolling Stone, so obviously shot by David La Chapelle, is a fine example of that & she does come across as quite interesting in the accompanying article. Still, I remain undecided. Guess I'll just have to stay tuned.

UPDATE : I just watched the new Jonas Akerlund-directed video, which I absolutely adore, for Lady Gaga's new tune, "Paparazzi", which I really couldn't care less about. This woman confuses me, damn it. And so, let the ambivalence continue...

KOSHi Luvs... Big Sur

It's hard to come home after a trip to Big Sur. It requires a period of adjustment. I miss the redwoods and moss, the clover and dirt, the birds, the rocks and cliffs and metaphysical books, the seemingly infinite species of flower. I miss the fog rolling in and out every morning, the fickle sun. I miss the way that the old-pro-locals light up at the tourists, because it's all too beautiful to abide a bad mood. Children blow bubbles and braid each other's hair. Grownups practice partners yoga and take in the view. There are many views to take in. Choose a direction, any direction, and you will find one. Mountains. Waterfalls. Rolling Hills. The Ocean.

L.A. is so grey by comparison. Traffic. Helicopters. Too Many Buildings. We've been back little more than 48 hours, and I already need a vacation. Since that's not going to happen anytime soon, how 'bout you join me for a lil mental vacay- say to Billy & Jo's Top Five Big Sur Destinations...

1. Deetjen's

2. The Henry Miller Library

3. The Spirit Garden and 4. Big Sur Bakery (side by side)

5. Nepenthe (GREAT gift shop downstairs)

BONUS GOODNESS: I can not do a list of favorite places to frequent in Big Sur without including the Flying Fish Grill in Carmel. It's a bit of a drive, say 40 scenic minutes North, but the atmosphere is so delicious and the food's to die for!

***Of course these selections are not counting the many awesome things to do outdoors (which is really the point of going to Big Sur in the first place) like riding horses through an ancient redwood forest to the beach, catching the waterfall that spills into the ocean at Julia Pfieffer State Park, gawking at the California Condors hanging out along the PCH, Esalen (which deserves a post of it's own), or any of the wild nature hikes and campgrounds to explore till your heart's content. I recommend it all, but you'll have to go find it yourself!)

Ommmm...

"We are what we think.
All that we are arises with our thoughts.
With our thoughts we make the world.
Speak or act with a pure mind,
and happiness will follow you
as your shadow, unshakeable.

How can a troubled mind understand the way?
Your worst enemy cannot harm you as much
as your own thoughts unguarded.
But once mastered,
no one can help you as much,
not even your father or your mother."

Buddha (from the Dhammapada, translated by Thomas Byron)

This reminds me... I'm gonna post the lyrics to "Om Song" here next week- after I get back from a much needed vacation. Till then, I've got two words for you...

The Dead Weather SOLD OUT

Someone has to die. This is me supercalifragilisticlypissed off!!!! I saved my little pennies, and counted down on my calendar to today at noon, so that I would be one of the first to get tix to The Dead Weather at The Wiltern (or Glasshouse) show this summer, and they were already sold out when I got there. How is that? Did some eBay douche bag go & buy them all up before the real fans got their chance or are there really that many crazy ass fanatics out there, beating me to the punch? I set my timer for Christ's sake. Waaahhhhh!!! It's not fair. Not fair, I say!

KOSHi Luvs... White Rabbits

It's so fun to have a new band to get yourself all worked up about. I mean, there are a zillion and one new bands floating around on MySpace and YouTube these days, which actually makes it harder sometimes to find one that really lights your pants on fire. I guess that's what psychologists refer to as "the law of diminishing returns"- you start to get numb to it after a while. But then, along comes a band like White Rabbits, and whoosh, just like that, your hiney's aflame.

That happened to me the first time I heard their song, "Percussion Gun", so I had to spin it on California Sound Control : Ride The Waves With Obedient Waves every show for probably too many weeks in a row. I just couldn't help myself. I also posted the video for that here last week and now, in case you missed their live performance of that very same song on Letterman monday, I've got "Percussion Gun" again for you today...

Also- you can bet your bippy that I'll be at The Troubadour to catch my first White Rabbits concert when they swing thru Hollywood on June 18th. Maybe I'll see ya there! Parumparumparumparumparumparumpapumpum...

Bleach Black Is Cooler Than You

Bleach Black chaps my hide! Those girls are always outdoing me in the cool department, and here they are doing it again. Fuckers! Just look at these rawkin' medicine bags & motorcycle pouches they've been turning their readers onto...

"The Pope Of Dope" Lyrics

"THE POPE OF DOPE"

They say there's no hope
For the pope of dope
Caught up in a cloud
Of make believe

They tried to save him
But chances were slim
For the man had vowed
Chronic Sick Leave
Chronic Sick Leave

Hell bent on escape
His mind taking shape
On a flower
Set himself free

There's no going back
He's tasted the smack
Sweet on the power
Of Potpourri
Potpourri

I been stoned
Cuzz I like to take it real slow
I drive stoned
Down the highway with my lights low
I get stoned
When I'm making less than I owe
I get stoned
Get stoned
Get stoned

I eat stoned
When I got a lot on my plate
I work stoned
Cuzz it helps to keep me up late
I get stoned
Just because it makes me feel great
I get stoned
Get Stoned
Get Stoned

Get Stoned
Get Stoned

The people can't cope
With the Pope of Dope
Tempting the children
With revelry

They tried to stop it
But he just won't quit
For the man had found
THC
THC

Determined to fly
His life passing by
Undermining
Everything

Declared himself God
A wink & a nod
Wearing a halo
Of smokey ring
Smokey Ring
Smokey Ring

I phone stoned
When I have to speak to family
I hang stoned
Just so that my friends can stand me
I get stoned
Cuzz it makes me feel I am free
I get stoned
Get Stoned
Get stoned

I play stoned
To release my inhibitions
I love stoned
When I'm trying new positions
I get stoned
Like my favorite musicians
I get stoned
Get Stoned
Get stoned

Get Stoned
Get stoned

Anna Wintour's 60 Minutes Interview

"People respond well to someone who's sure of what they want"...

Obedient Waves on Buzz Bands L.A.

I am loving Kevin Bronson right now. Thanks to that lovely music-luvin' man, THiS is what I got to wake up to this morning...

"Just because Obedient Waves’ punk rock is no-frills doesn’t mean it’s no-thrills. The songwriting duo of Billy Gruber and Joanna DeVoe write bombastic ditties with barbed-wire lyrics, and their boy-girl vocals might come across as mere playground taunting if they weren’t so clever. Their exploits include a 16-month, six-EP project titled “Rock & Roll 4 President,” and, having obviously changed the course of political history, they quickly moved on. They are offering their “We Never Liked You Anyway” EP for free download, and are preparing the new “Rumble Fish” EP — their eighth such release in under two years. Whew."
